O’Meara’s SuperValu Portumna is proud to celebrate 45 years in business and in service to the local Portumna community. First opened in 1980, the second-generation family store is now led by Yvonne O’Meara. The anniversary coincides with the store surpassing €2.5 million in investment since 2022.
Marking the milestone, Yvonne O’Meara said: “We are incredibly proud to celebrate 45 years serving the people of Portumna. This store has always been about community, and it has been a privilege to continue the legacy started by my parents, Donie and Marie. Their values of hard work, care and commitment continue to guide everything we do. I’m deeply grateful to our customers, our fantastic team and the wider community for their support over the years.”
Luke Hanlon, Managing Director of SuperValu, also paid tribute to the store’s contribution: “O’Meara’s SuperValu is a shining example of what makes community retail so special. For 45 years, the O’Meara family has provided exceptional service, local employment and unwavering support for Portumna. We are proud to stand alongside Yvonne and her team as they continue to invest, grow and innovate while staying true to the values that have defined this store for decades.”
The anniversary was celebrated last weekend with live music, food tastings and a cooking demonstration with SuperValu Brand Ambassador Sarah Butler. Shoppers also enjoyed spot prizes and competitions throughout the festivities.
O’Meara’s SuperValu was originally founded by the late Donie O’Meara, a highly respected figure in Irish retail who guided the store with distinction for decades. Following his passing in February 2023, the store was passed to his daughter Yvonne, who has continued to build on his legacy. A memorial walk for Donie and Marie O’Meara took place as part of the weekend’s commemorations.
In 2022, the store underwent a major €1.2 million redevelopment, transforming it into a modern, state-of-the-art retail destination. The investment expanded the offering to include a new Frank & Honest café, Moo’d ice cream, a full in-store bakery, handmade donuts, an upgraded hot food counter, a new Happy Pear range, and dedicated areas for value, seasonal and own-brand products.
The redevelopment also created new roles across the chef, bakery and barista teams. Supporting local employment has long been central to O’Meara’s SuperValu, with more than 1,500 people having started their working careers in the store since its opening.
Sustainability has been a major priority for the business in recent years. The 2022 refurbishment included €700,000 worth of environmental upgrades – most notably energy-efficient refrigeration that reduced electricity consumption by up to 75%. A further €100,000 investment in 2024 has contributed to a significant 45% reduction in carbon emissions. The installation of 382 solar panels now generates enough energy to power 77 homes annually.
Throughout its 45 years, O’Meara’s SuperValu has remained deeply rooted in its community, proudly supporting local schools, sports clubs, TidyTowns, Cancer Care West and numerous local initiatives.
